DreamHost Uptime Review 2022

DreamHost appears to be experiencing 99.99 percent uptime at the moment. Let's look at it as a journey to obtain it over the last few years.

DreamHost Uptime Review

What is Uptime?

The amount of time that a website or web service is available to users in a given period is referred to as website uptime. The ratio is calculated in monthly or yearly increments and is represented as a ratio of available time divided by total time. Although 100 percent uptime is ideal, 99.999 percent uptime is considered exceptional availability by the industry.

How is DreamHost Uptime

Typically, uptime is measured on a monthly basis. A thirty-day month contains 43 200 minutes, therefore 99.9% uptime equates to just more than 43 minutes of downtime every month. Each 0.1 percent of uptime corresponds to 43 minutes of uptime or downtime.

The majority of downtime will be scheduled for system maintenance and will occur during off-hours, such as 2:00 a.m. on Sunday. Then there is episodic or semi-planned downtime, which is typically required for system software security updates. A botnet discovers a new vulnerability, a patch is released to fix it, and your hosting provider must apply it before everything gets pooched.

Then there are the unintentional, unanticipated outages that have impacted every major service provider, including Apple, AWS, Google, Microsoft, and Facebook. When a maintenance update goes wrong or a specialist configures a router incorrectly, everything goes wrong, typically for hours.

The reality is that uptime is highly stochastic. Chance, or, if you prefer, good fortune.

Measuring uptime might vary significantly depending on the time period being considered - hour, week, month, or year. If you choose a host based on its monthly uptime ranking, keep in mind that another provider is likely to take the top spot the following month.

Interesting: Significance of term cloud in Cloud Computing

For instance, hrank.com gives data on DreamHost's uptime for the last many years. They discovered that DreamHost's annual uptime was between 99.877 and 99.948 percent between 2020 and 2018.

However, WebsiteSetup reports that DreamHost's uptime in 2020 was 99.62 percent, far below the industry average. Which one, therefore, is it? Which is faster — 99.948 percent for Hrank or 99.62 percent for WebsiteSetup — and which takes around 2.4 hours less time?

Who can predict what will happen? Additionally, I believe that it is irrelevant. There is a deeper issue at stake here.

This is a minuscule adjustment. When intelligent people attempting to measure uptime are so widely off, one might ask how much we should rely on publicly available statistics.

This brings me full round to the satisficing concept. Almost any hosting firm that has been in business for ten years or more – DreamHost will celebrate 25 years in business this year — is likely to have a high level of uptime.

Certain hosts can achieve 100 percent uptime for small periods of time. However, when even multibillion-dollar firms staffed by PhDs experience disruptions lasting hours on end, what can be inferred except that downtime is unpredictable? Avoid a host whose service is consistently poor. However, you should not compare recent data as if they were written in stone. As financial institutions frequently assert, "past performance is no guarantee of future success."
